The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness.  These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world.  Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

This operation is Nation Wide please check out your area for a Stand Down Operation

The First Annual Operation Stand Down Huntsville will be held on November 2-4 at Joe Davis Stadium.  Registration will be from 0700am -1200pm Friday November 2nd 2007 and Saturday November 3rd from 0700am - 1200pm

What is a Stand Down?

In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battle fields to a place of relative security and safety. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaradererie of friends in a safe environment.

Today, Stand Down refers to a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help the nation’s estimated 200,000 homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets. Homeless veterans are brought together in a single location for one to three days and are provided access to the community resources needed to begin addressing their individual problems and rebuilding their lives. In the military, Stand Down afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being. Today’s Stand Down affords the same opportunity to homeless veterans.

The members of “Operation Stand Down Huntsville “wants to continue what begun in San Diego during the spring of 1988. It is estimated that more than 100,000 homeless, veterans have received assistance at Stand Downs. It will give our homeless veterans some time to rest and recover from the day to day living on the streets, alleys, under bridges, in cars or where ever they can find shelter. We can do this by providing a secure area where they will feel safe, if only for a while. If we can save one life it will be worth it, if we can get one veteran off drugs and back to work it will be worth it. Veterans will be informed of community federal and state services.

Operation Stand Down will require a great deal of support from our community. If your organization would like to participate in this worthy cause, please contact us. We need Volunteers, men’s clothing, food, and money assistance (tax deductible).

Also, if you would like to be part of Operation Stand Down Team contact us.
