Many of
the military personnel are grievously wounded and require long
hospitalization and rehabilitation. The purpose of LHCP's
program is to enhance the morale and welfare of the wounded by
contributing quality of life items such as sweat pants, sweat
shirts, pajamas, lounge pants, boxers, socks, and seasonal
jackets or coats. Combat Support Hospitals also receive items
such as sheets, blankets, pillows, and towels. Each shipment
that Landstuhl Hospital Care Project sends is sent in honor of
a military member who has made the ultimate sacrifice and lost
his or her life in service to our country.
Your
donations will help our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines
know that they are supported. Please see below to find
out more about how you can contribute.
How Did We Get Started?
This
effort began after founder Karen Grimord traveled to Germany
in August of 2004 to visit her daughter and son-in-law who
were stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base. At that time, LRMC
had a very small collection of movies (DVD/VHS) for the
wounded military personnel to watch while they were
recuperating from their injuries. When Karen returned to the
States, she contacted her family and shared what she had
learned with them. Through the efforts of her family members,
and the Talakto District Boy Scouts of America from
Huntsville, Alabama, 485 DVD and VHS tapes were sent to the
Pastoral Services at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for the
injured men and women to watch.
After this shipment, a Chaplain at LRMC
was asked what other help was needed. He provided LRMC’s
Giving Statement and identified other items of need at that
time. He explained that patients often arrive at LRMC with no
clothing other than the hospital garments that they are
wearing. He also explained that each Operation Iraqi Freedom
(OIF) or Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) patient receives a
$250 voucher from the Department of Defense that is to be used
at the local Army/Air Force Exchange Service facility for
clothing and personal hygiene items. However, there are times
when additional items are needed - above and beyond what the
voucher is able to provide.
LHCP
was founded to provide sweat suits for our wounded military to
wear as they received care at LRMC. As the group has grown,
so also has our mission expanded. Our major goal now is to
get the Chaplains the items they require to provide support
and comfort for our men and woman to convalesce. These needs
change month to month, so our goals change as well. That is
why your donations are so important! The funds we raise and
use to purchase needed items, and the items that get donated
from lists we post, allow us to fill LRMC and field hospital
requests. Shipments are typically made at the end of each
week.
